Dutch Clean Tech raises €15 million after acquiring 25% stake in Guatemalan drinking water firm Agua del Mariscal

Dutch Clean Tech, a Heerhugowaard-based company that develops, finances, builds, and operates water treatment and drinking water projects around the world, has raised €15 million, which has enabled it to acquire a 25% stake in Agua del Mariscal, one of Central America’s oldest private drinking water

Dutch Clean Tech , a Heerhugowaard-based company that develops, finances, builds, and operates water treatment and drinking water projects around the world, has raised €15 million, which has enabled it to acquire a 25% stake in Agua del Mariscal, one of Central America’s oldest private drinking water companies.

The company has raised this capital from its existing investors and will obtain a seat on Agua del Mariscal’s Board of Directors.

“Water is becoming one of the world’s most strategic resources. Our ambition extends beyond developing, financing, and operating water treatment and drinking water facilities. We also aim to invest in companies that play a critical role in securing the future of drinking water supply. Agua del Mariscal is a perfect example: a company with nearly a century of history, a unique market position, and tremendous growth potential,” said Sander Pielkenrood , CEO of Dutch Clean Tech.

Founded in 2002 by Sander Pielkenrood, Dutch Clean Tech claims that it makes clean water available to industries and governments through a combination of smart technology and capital from European investors. It is based on the 60+ years of experience in water treatment of its sister company, Pielkenrood.

Sander Pielkenrood spent seventeen years working alongside his father to develop the family business, Pielkenrood. Since 1962, Pielkenrood has been developing customised water purification systems for oil/water separation, supplied to industrial customers worldwide.

Based on Pielkenrood’s technology, Dutch Clean Tech has developed a modular, scalable installation for the production of clean drinking water and the purification of waste water. The company states that it makes clean water available to industries and governments through a unique combination of smart, proven technology and capital from European investors.

Governments and industries outsource their water treatment to the company on a long-term contract basis to design, build and operate. Instead of investing in their own water treatment facilities, they are financed by investors and pay the company monthly for the treated water. “This gives them quick access to the right facilities and offers our investors a valuable, secure investment in the fast-growing global water market, with an average return of 9%,” mentioned Dutch Clean Tech.

The company is active in the Netherlands, Mexico, Guatemala, and the Middle East. According to Dutch Clean Tech, in Guatemala, drinking water infrastructure is struggling to keep pace with population growth. It states that approximately 44% of households lack access to safely managed drinking water, and the public water distribution network loses between 35% and 50% of its treated water each year due to ageing infrastructure. Through its investment in Agua del Mariscal, Dutch Clean Tech and its investors are responding to the growing demand for reliable private drinking water providers.

Founded in 1928, Agua del Mariscal was the first private drinking water company in Central America. The company supplies drinking water to households, businesses, and real estate developments across Guatemala City.

It was acquired in 2025 by a consortium of Guatemalan entrepreneurs, and a growth programme was launched, which Dutch Clean Tech aims to accelerate. The goal is to transform Agua del Mariscal into Guatemala’s largest private drinking water company, with revenue projected to grow from nearly €3.1 million ($3.6 million) today to more than €35 million ($40 million) by 2033, and the number of connected customers is expected to grow more than fivefold.

Dutch Clean Tech is investing alongside a number of prominent international partners, including Aguas de Valencia, which has been active in the drinking water sector for more than 130 years. Together, the partners will invest a total of €52.6 million ($60 million) in the further development of Agua del Mariscal.
